Hi all!

My name is Shandi and I live in Kitchener. I found out about this forum through the Southwestern Ontario Parrot Club via Carol and Nicole.

I am owned by a 7 year old green cheek conure named Kiwi (though I've only had her for 4 or 5 months) and a handsome little year and a half old parrotlet named Jack the Ripper (i've had him since he was a few months old). I love my feathered kids so much! :)

I was never a bird person... i was more into dogs.. and still am... but on our wedding night, my husband and I stayed a bed and breakfast in Elora and the owners had 2 macaws, a cockatiel and a parrotlet... and it was little Maui, the parrotlet, that sparked a love of birds in me. Her lparrotlet was so cute and so little! I knew we had to have one. After a month of research, one of my close friends took me to Exotic Wings and bought me my Mr Ripper as a birthday present. And it has been amazing ever since!

Jack has been the perfect bird! Knowing parrotlets could be territorial and aggressive, I made all the necessary preventative measures and thus far have had no issues what so ever. Even being fully flighted for 10 months hasn't caused any dominance. We clipped him when we brought him home, but allowed his flights to grow back in after his first big molt. I just recently upgraded him to a HQ flight cage, and the little squirt is happy as can be in his mansion. Every now and then I work double shifts and don't get home early enough to get out of cage time (he usually falls asleep around 9 pm).... and now I don't feel bad if he misses a day being out. He no longer demands to be out, and is quite happy in his huge cage. He spends all day ripping, shredding, tearing and foraging for his food. It keeps him very busy :) When he isn't foraging, I have him out to fly. He loves doing laps around the house, zooming to and fro. He has such a blast flying! Throughout my house i have various playstands and perches hung (like most of you, I imagine), and he alternates landing spots. It's amazing how large the gusts of wind his little wings make!

Enough about Jack. Now for Kiwi. She came to us 4 or 5 months ago as we had just rehomed our lineolated parakeet. Our linnie had been with us just over a year and she had overly bonded with Jack. She had become very sexually frustrated and aggressive, to my husband and I, and Jack... causing lots of stress on all of us. It was a very hard decision to rehome home, but definitely the best. I am still in contact with her new owners and as an only bird she is much happier. Anyways, 2 days after rehoming Kiwi, one of my good friends called me up and asked if my husband and I wanted a conure. For some time we had been discussing getting a conure, but we hadn't planned for it to be any time soon. It ended up that a friend of my friends was moving to France for a new job and was unable to take Kiwi with him. So, a few days later, Miss Kiwi joined our family. She came to us a feather chewer and odd smelling, but was deemed healthy after a vet visit. She was on diet of fruit pellets and fresh fruit. The only veggie she ever ate was corn. In her cage were three toys. I was saddened by the scraggly little girl.... but her eager to cuddle and ride on my shoulder every I went attitude soon melted my heart. I switched her over to a natural pellet and veggie mash diet in two days, and filled her cage with toys, as well as offered some full spectrum lighting. In the few short months I've had her, it is amazing to see the changes in her. While she still has some scruffy tail feathers and upper shoulder feathers, the new ones growing in are lush and beautiful.... and her feather chewing has stopped to a normal bird preen. I no longer see her preening herself constantly or chewing her feathers to bits. She has become less clingy and more independent. While she still loves spending as much time with me as possible, she is quite content to spend time playing on her playstand during times I can't have her on me.

Like most conures she loves her baths. I start doing the dishes and she nearly divebombs into the sink. She has learned now to dive bomb into her birdbath instead. lol! She is a snuggle bug, and adores cuddling on my shoulder, burrowing herself in my hair, quacking happily. Then moments later, she is up, running over to my husband, to preen his facial hair. Then with happy quacks she runs back to me for some snuggles.

I couldn't ask for better fids :hrtbt:

And luckily these two tolerate each other, and see one another as flockmates, but prefer the companionship of people... preferrably me. It's quite normal to have Jack on one shoulder and Kiwi on the other. :)

and for some reason I cant post pics in my thread... says they are too big

Well, here's a collage i made of Jack : http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/pp124/skthurley/JACKTHERIPPER.jpg

and the only pic I have our Kiwi is the bad one below from our camera phone

Welcome! You have beautiful fids! I am owned by :dki: ...named after those quacks you mentioned

You must be a strong person to make the decisions you've had to make. But with your obvious adoration of your fids, you'll fit in great here! :yppe:

Welcome Shandi! So glad you joined us already! You already received a message from adorable little Ducki's mom! LOL I'm sure you'll have lots in common! You stories about your fids are great! They are very lucky to have you! I didn't know your gcc came to you as a plucker - never would have guessed it by looking at her!! Good job! You may have helped others already without even knowing it and you've obviously done tons of research!!!! I have 2 fids that came to me as feather destroyers - one plucker and the other chews and snaps and I have not had the success you have had. Kudos to you! Looking forward to more stories and posts from you!

:hello: Welcome and what a wonderful introduction to your feathered family members and yourself.
Conures are fabulous birds...I am owned by a Crimson Belly Gracie and a Nanday Abby. They are wonderful
girls and love each other so much they share a cage. I have also had the joy of handraising many green cheeks,
suns, gold caps, jendays along with lovebirds, parrotlets, cockatiels, quakers, yellow sided, painted, firey shoulders,
blue head pionus, white cap pionus, african greys, a blue and gold macaw and a starling.
The conures are the best in the clown department and love to play and take baths and cuddle.
There is nothing like a cuddle from a soaking wet conure. :biglph: :biglph:
I look forward to hearing more about you feathered friends and I hope you enjoy this group of bird crazy people.

Thanks for all the welcomes, guys :)

in terms of foraging, I try to make every toy an opportunity for my birds, especially Jack, to forage. I do simple things, like have various small dishes in the cage, full of beads and shredded paper, and pellets or seeds. In Jack's cage current he has 2 food dishes with pellets and shredded paper in one, and seeds and beads in another. THen he has a cocohut filled with shredded paper, beads, pellets and a nutriberry crushed up. Then he has a hay toy from the small pet section at petsmart full of strips of paper with 1/4 of an avicake and pellets crinkled up in a ball of newspaper. He has a birdie kabob with a few seeds pushed in the material, as well as a large munch ball with pellets wrapped into a ball of newspaper in the center. He has a smaller munch ball toy with balls of newspaper inside, containing some seed and pellets. He also has a foraging toy that I bought from Carol at the Guelph Bird event, which he has nearly destroyed. it had 2 shreddable compartments to hide goodies in and there's only 3/4 of one left. lol! I will use it until he fully destroys it, then take the remaining parts and make another fun toy :) I checked her website and she doesn't have a picture of it up. I have also made something similar to the toy Carol sells called the Puzzler. I use a birdie kabob stick and thread on finger traps, and fill the finger traps with newspaper, beads and pellets and nutriberry pieces. Jack LOVES finger traps! I have also made boxes out of cardboard and poked holes in them filled them with pellets and clipped them to various areas in the cage. Jack was terrified of these at first.... but watching me fiddle with it and cut a larger hole so he could seed treats were inside took away his fear, and in a few days the boxes were destroyed. I also bought a wicker canary nest and filled it with beads, shredded paper and pellets, then hung it in his cage. He didn't really like this toy... it made him angry and he knocked it down everytime i put it in his cage. lol! Silly goof! :claph:

Kiwi is still in the beginning stages of foraging. In her cage she has two dishes full of shredded paper, beads and seed goodies, as well as a birdie pinata. Ive also taken to throwing some large beads in her food dish. It's hilarious watching her angrily throw them to the cage floor. She makes angrily noises, and says 'que pasa' over and over again. lol! Her former owner was spanish, and Ive noticed whenever she is angry or annoyed she says 'que pasa'

Kiwi has also started spending time in Jack's cage whenever I'm home.... and she has taken to exploring his foraging toys. She gets bored very easily, so if she doesn't find a goodie within a few seconds she gives up. lol!

My next birdie purchase is a larger cage for Kiwi. She's in an EZ Care glassfront with playstand on top.... in cockatiel size. It came with her when I adopted her, and it's becoming more obvious that she would like more room. I just recently got Jack the HQ flight cage, and Kiwi seems jealous. lol! So I'm on the hunt for something comparable in size to the HQ flight, but not as tall and with a playstand on top. I LOVE having the extra playstand. Both birds use Kiwi's with great frequency.

Anyways, i hope that answers the questions about my foraging toys. :)

Ducki's favorite foraging toy is simple - a nutriberry tight wrapped in a folded paper towel with the open side tied shut with a bit of sisal rope. He knows what's in there because he watches me put the nutriberry in - then spends a lot of time holding the whole thing in one foot and waving it around while happily shredding the paper. He usually get the nutriberry out within 15min (it depends on how quick I am picking the toy off the floor when he chucks it off the top of the cage).

Hmmmmm, Carol, are you thinking what I'm thinking..............................great meeting topic - "foraging ideas". Shandi, you have excellent ideas and it would be great to some of your foraging inventions in real life! I'm banking that one for a future topic. I'm impressed with your creativity!!!!!

Sure you can. I know there is an excellent online (free) download book for foraging too - I printed it off and it's somewhere. Isn't there a foraging video at Mark's store too? Perhaps we should discuss at the next exec meeting.

hehehe! I would love a video of Ducki doing that, andrea! It sounds so cute!

Foraging is my favorite bird topic :)

it started when I discovered that parrotlets are just as prone to plucking as cockatoos. With detailed research I realized that foraging, among other things, was a good way to prevent it. So I went crazy looking for ideas how to give Jack foraging opportunities. There are some great resources out there! The foraging ebooks are my fav :)

There aren't a whole lot of foraging toys on the market for the little guys though. :( So i had to get creative. And even there there is so much more I want to do. I'm very thankful for such a large cage

I would love to have this topic be discussed at our next meeting. I havent had an opportunity to watch a foraging video, but I would love to :)
